In just three lunar cycles,
your fingertips unzipped my being,
with not so much a restriction
or wind blowing in a different direction.
I am not certain why or how
you became embedded in my soul,
as if the first glance offered recognition
or for what is surely to come: consolation.
In just three lunar cycles,
you were the sunrise I longed to see
and the sunset I could only dream of,
for the stars offer nothing but misery.
Sometimes, I wonder if the height I fell from
is greater than the depth I fell into.
Maybe these flames shone too bright,
and there is no other choice but to extinguish.
Maybe, in reaching for our dreams so grand,
we burned ourselves — too fast, too young.
A part of me longs for our souls to flare again,
at a time when everything finally feels right.
But you know what I heard?
Those you meet at the wrong time are not the right ones.
Comfort: we had a good run,
but it was never meant to last.

New Beginnings is our third and final volume of 2020. It is also our longest yet, with close to 100 pieces having been sent in for review from over 80 writers. Additionally, this volume marks a step towards making our initiative even more inclusive, having opened submissions for art and photography, too.
2021 may not be the new beginning for which we are all hoping. In fact, it is likely that the world will stay largely the same. However, that doesn’t stop us doing what we can to make it a little better. In supporting and being involved in an initiative whose primary motivation is to build one another up, our team and readership have certainly proven to be committed to making positive change already.
