Eden

Emily Latimer

Withered by the world, Eden grew astray,

And with no more promise of orchards, people turned away.

Night and day Eve planted, but weeds grew in their place,

And her hope of a beautiful garden soon became erased.

Like a mole she retreated, further into her burrow,

Hiding each day and night, afraid again for tomorrow.

Her clothes changed from pink to grey without the sun to brighten,

And the more she stowed away, to her the world seemed to frighten.

It wasn’t until one day she heard a person at her door,

Only to find her closest friend standing there before her.

“Dear one,” she said, “Take my hand and come with me.”

So, from her burrow she ventured, to see what there was to see.

The birds and bees had all come out, and a forest stood before her.

But how? It’d all grown dead; now the plants were free and taller.

“Together we found new seeds, scattered them to roam.”

And from this creation, the old garden turned into their home.

New Beginnings is our third and final volume of 2020. It is also our longest yet, with close to 100 pieces having been sent in for review from over 80 writers. Additionally, this volume marks a step towards making our initiative even more inclusive, having opened submissions for art and photography, too.

2021 may not be the new beginning for which we are all hoping. In fact, it is likely that the world will stay largely the same. However, that doesn’t stop us doing what we can to make it a little better. In supporting and being involved in an initiative whose primary motivation is to build one another up, our team and readership have certainly proven to be committed to making positive change already.
