You Make me So Sad

Anna Ilaria Crysel

You make me so sad with your perfect eyes.

Was this what all the poets were talking about constantly?

2 needles are in the back of my throat, pinning away.

One is for how cruel you are,

and one is for how stupid I am.

You came back just to feel like you were wanted,

because that’s all I was ever good for.

You used me to reflect some of my soul in you;

you are as empty as a discarded shell,

Floating about, looking for a place to anchor itself —

I was that place for a while.

But you’ll keep drifting off, looking for something better;

Because in you there is just a sticky sense of loneliness.

I always said I loved you unconditionally —

I loved you the way you love something you make.

Why’s that?

Because I made all the memories we had, with my own love

And you were just there, like a mirror,

reflecting back the light I shone.

I always thought the main difference between me and you was who we were,

but now I realise that what used to be so easy to say is what keeps us apart the most;

“I love you” is the only thing Ii want from you —

and it’s what you can never give me

Not wanting to be with you

never meant I didn’t love you.

New Beginnings is our third and final volume of 2020. It is also our longest yet, with close to 100 pieces having been sent in for review from over 80 writers. Additionally, this volume marks a step towards making our initiative even more inclusive, having opened submissions for art and photography, too.

2021 may not be the new beginning for which we are all hoping. In fact, it is likely that the world will stay largely the same. However, that doesn’t stop us doing what we can to make it a little better. In supporting and being involved in an initiative whose primary motivation is to build one another up, our team and readership have certainly proven to be committed to making positive change already.
