Uni Days
Staring at the pink wall, in the room I grew up in,
the same window I dreamt out of,
as I have grown up,
my home town has shrunk around me.
I miss my bedroom opposite yours,
slipping into each other’s bubbles.
Playing Fleetwood Mac in the shower,
and hearing you listen 10 minutes after.
When our makeup bag was one,
and we picked each other’s outfits.
When we lived our lives together;
not caught up over coffee.
I miss watching The Chase in the kitchen,
and seeing your turkey dinosaurs in the oven.
The time you sleepwalked into my bed,
and the time I cried in yours.
I miss not knowing what was better,
getting drunk
or the hungover gossip in our duvets in the morning.
Guessing who had stayed the night
from the shoes left in the doorway.
When being in your overdraft
or losing your keys was funny,
and breaking into your house through a window
was just another story.
I miss the people who drifted in and out
of the door that was never locked,
and even those shared all-nighters.
I miss the messy house and the shower that was broken.
The leak in your room and all the cigarette butts in the garden.
I miss it all,
like a book I’ve left open;
already finished
but clutching onto.
I miss it all –
but I know,
there’s a whole world out there,
with more books left to open.

New Beginnings is our third and final volume of 2020. It is also our longest yet, with close to 100 pieces having been sent in for review from over 80 writers. Additionally, this volume marks a step towards making our initiative even more inclusive, having opened submissions for art and photography, too.
2021 may not be the new beginning for which we are all hoping. In fact, it is likely that the world will stay largely the same. However, that doesn’t stop us doing what we can to make it a little better. In supporting and being involved in an initiative whose primary motivation is to build one another up, our team and readership have certainly proven to be committed to making positive change already.
